NOTE: YOU *M*U*S*T* REPLACE BOTH THE "Remember? Startup" AND "Remember? DA" FILES! AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW DA, YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY OPEN IT FROM THE DA MENU SO THAT IT CAN UPDATE SOME INFORMATION REQUIRED BY THE POP-UP ALERT HANDLER. THEN DO A Finder "Restart" TO INSTALL THE NEW ALERT HANDLER.
ÑÑÑ Bugs Fixed ÑÑÑ
Ñ Pop-up alerts set to appear in the previous day now work correctly (in version 2.1.1 the pop-up window would continuously reappear until you deleted the occasion.)
Ñ The pop-up alert handler has been restructured internally. The new version hooks itself into the Mac operating system using a very different, and much more compatible method. Problems experienced with White Knight¬, Illustrator¬ 3.0 and other applications should be gone. Also, alerts work better with screen savers like Pyro¬ and AutoIdle¬.
One minor drawback of the new structure is that pop-up alerts can be a little sluggish to appear and disappear in response to the "hot key.". This isn't a bug, just the result of the more conservative internal interface used by the alerts. I don't think it is significant enough to be annoying.
Ñ Redundant pop-up alerts have been eliminated. You should now get exactly two alerts for an occasion, one at the "Alert" time, and another at the "Start" time (if it is different.) You can also get an alert if you turn on the Mac shortly after an alert's start time. This is a feature, I am trying to remind you just in case you missed something while the machine was off.
Ñ When the alert pops-up in HyperCard and the menu bar has been hidden, space is reserved at the top of the screen in case the menu bar reappears while the alert is visible. (Previous versions could leave junk on the menu bar.)
Ñ Choosing "Remember? DA" from the pop-up alert's menu while the DA is already open no longer opens extra copies of the default windows.
Ñ Printing the contents of a "What's Happening" window may be able to fit an extra line of text at the bottom of each column (depends on the type of printer and other mumbo-jumbo.)
Ñ Specification of Canadian Thanksgiving day in the "Holidays" file was correct only for 1990, it now works for any year.
Ñ "Cut" or "Paste" of text in an "Edit Occasion" window now correctly enables the "New" and "Replace" menu items.
Ñ The "Define Occasion Types╔" dialog now correctly shows or hides the "prefixed by" string when you select an occasion type from the pop-up menu. You will also be prompted whether changes to the current type should be saved (previous versions would save without asking.)
ÑÑÑ New Features ÑÑÑ
Ñ A "New" command has been added to the pop-up alert window's menu. It will open the DA with a fresh "Edit Occasion" window set for today's date and time.
Ñ The pop-up alerts look a little different. On Color Macs they have more 3D features, even the text has a drop shadow (which can be disabled with ResEdit if desired.) If you have 256 or more colors, you might want to try the following settings in the "Preferences: Visuals" dialog:
Text in pop-up alerts:
Font: Chicago (system font), Size: 12, Style: Condensed
Color: red=51681, green=53248, blue=41778
Alert Background color:
red=16384, green=16384, blue=16384
╔border (light)
red=24576, green=24576, blue=24576
╔border (dark)
red=8192, green=8192, blue=8192
Ñ Added an option "Skip Startup Check" to the "What's Happening" window's menu. It allows you to specify windows that are opened by default, but not checked for significant occasions by "Remember? Startup." Here's how to do it.
Open a "What's Happening" window and set it to the range of days you want checked when you turn on the Mac (say, "5 Days from Today.") Open another "What's Happening" window (by holding down the SHIFT key when you select the "What's Happening" menu item) and set it to "This Month." Select "Skip Startup Check" in its pop-up menu to turn off checkiung for that window. Make sure your occasion files are open, then select "Save File & Window Setup" in the main menu. Now when you start up the Mac, only "5 Days from Today" will be checked. But when you open the DA you also get a window showing the entire month at a glance.
This is kind of convoluted but it does work. I am looking into ways to simplify the entire scheme and will incorporate it into a future version.
ÑÑÑ Other Changes ÑÑÑ
Ñ The "Remember? Manual" is formatted for a LaserWriter printer. Other printers may break the pages on different boundaries.
Ñ Pop-up alerts would automatically Go Away after about an hour if you didn't respond to them. This "feature" has been removed, alerts now stay visible until you make them go away.
Ñ Removed all restrictions on running the DA from the pop-up alert. You can now run it even if MultiFinder's "DA Handler" is active, and at Startup when you have instructed MultiFinder to open other DAs by default.
Ñ The colors used in the startup ICONs have been changed to colors in the Apple recommended ICON set.
Ñ In the ╟Preferences╔Alerts╚ dialog, the proportions of the "screen" showing where pop-up alerts appear are adjusted to match your main monitor screen.
Ñ Added occasions to "Famous BDays" file.
Ñ The About box now plays a certain sound if it is available.
ÑÑÑÑÑ COMING ATTRACTIONS (A FEW HIGHLIGHTS) ÑÑÑÑÑ
Ñ Ability to type in an entire occasion definition without using the pop-up and clock items in the "Edit Occasion" window.
Ñ Some sort of "To Do" list. (Either a new "To Do" window or "persistent" occasions that reappear every day till you tell them to go away.) Any preferences here?
Ñ Changes to pop-up alerts to allow more than 24 hours advance warning, and the ability to see occasions with no specific time (this may take a while since it requires fairly extensive changes to the alert handler.)
Ñ Ability to automatically execute a "macro key" from an alert occasion.
ÑÑÑÑÑ KNOWN PROBLEMS ÑÑÑÑÑ
Ñ Pop-up alert windows can be overwritten when they appear on top of some game or paint program windows. No bombs, it just looks a little funny.
Ñ SuperBoomerang¬ can draw a single black line through parts of the pop-up alert when you are working with "Open" or "New" file dialogs. Again, it just looks a bit funny. Nothing is broken.
Ñ Microsoft Word¬ can look a little strange if you are typing text near the pop-up alert window when it floats on top of the document window. Also, for some reason Word sometimes does not display the first few keystrokes after a pop-up alert appears. They are entered correctly in the document, but don't appear until you type a few keys. Not sure how to go about fixing this one since all of MicroSoft's stuff is written in custom "P-code" which I cannot decode.
Ñ "Big Foot" can leave footprints on the pop-up alert window. Not sure I want to fix this one since it looks kind of neat.
Ñ The DA might not work correctly with System 7.0B1 in 32 bit address mode. I have added a possible fix but it has not been tested.
